7 Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid

Benefits-of-hyaluronic-acid_water-splash

  1. Hydrating and plumping

The main benefit of Hyaluronic Acid is its hydrating properties to allow hydration into the deepest layers of the skin. The molecule can hold 1000 times its weight in water, which produces a plumping effect through hydration as if soaking a dry sponge.

  1. Skin Barrier Repair

The presence of Hyaluronic Acid in skin promotes skin barrier repair to fortify skin and speed up wound healing.

  1. Anti-inflammation

High molecular weight hyaluronic acid has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties; hence it has been used in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis.

  1. Wound Healing

In-vivo, naturally occurring hyaluronic acid promotes wound healing by triggering mechanisms (including angiogenesis) that form new blood vessels from pre-existing blood vessels to get oxygen to the area of the damaged skin – allowing better healing of the wound.

  1. Improves Skin Texture

As Hyaluronic Acid hydrates, its plumps up skin which also improves overall skin texture, promoting a softer and smoother appearance.

  1. Antioxidant activity

Hyaluronic Acid has antioxidant properties where it will protect skin against free radical damage.

  1. Anti-ageing

Due to the antioxidant activity and plumping effect, it has anti-ageing properties to fill in the gaps for wrinkles and improve wrinkles and fine lines.

The injectables version, which can get into deeper layers of the skin, is used to fill in wrinkles – promoting a plumper appearance for a more extended period instead of topical application of Hyaluronic Acid.

Hyaluronic Acid FAQ

hyaluronic-acid-frequently-asked-questions_water-droplet

Is Hyaluronic Acid an antioxidant?

Hyaluronic acid has antioxidant properties, which means it has the properties to protect skin against free radical damage. It is a carrier molecule, so it is best to power it with a powerful antioxidant such as Vitamin C to get the most out of your antioxidants.

Is Hyaluronic Acid nourishing?

The Oxford definition of nourishing is “(of food or drink) helping a person, an animal or a plant grow and be healthy”. In the context of skincare, it can be found that the product/ ingredient helps the skin become healthier attributed to nutrients delivered to the skin. With this in mind, Hyaluronic Acid can be considered nourishing as it helps deliver nutrients from other ingredients to the skin.

Can Hyaluronic Acid be used every day?

Yes, it is safe to be used daily. However, it must be used correctly to prevent dehydration – the opposite effect of what you want from Hyaluronic Acid. Hyaluronic acid draws water from the air (functions as a humectant); if there is no water in the air (i.e., dry climates), it will begin to draw water from the skin, leading to a counterintuitive effect. Therefore, to prevent further dehydration, it is recommended to seal it with an occlusive moisturizer. Always moisturize to seal and lock in moisture, keeping it hydrated and plump and enjoy the benefits of Hyaluronic Acid.

Does Hyaluronic Acid brighten skin?

Unfortunately, Hyaluronic Acid alone does not have brightening properties. For brightening dark spots and even out skin tone, look for brightening actives such as Vitamin C, and Niacinamide etc.

Is Hyaluronic Acid good for sensitive/ irritated skin?

Hyaluronic acid is tolerable by all skin types; however, a drawback for Hyaluronic Acid is that it is a carrier molecule. Thus, if mixed with some irritating ingredients – it will absorb the irritants further into the skin, doing more harm than good. It is recommended to be careful with which products you are using in your routine to avoid irritating skin.

Also, be mindful to always incorporate an occlusive moisturizer to follow up your serum to ensure that Hyaluronic Acid does not draw out water from your skin instead of the environment, especially in dry climates.

Librarian Tip: In dry climates, or when the heating is on full blast use a humidifier to keep the air humid. For a top up, spritz on your favourite facial mist.

Is Hyaluronic Acid good for ageing skin?

Hyaluronic acid has anti-ageing properties; however, the benefits are short-lived when topically applied. For anti-ageing, it is better to use ingredients that have powerful anti-ageing properties, such as retinoids, the “royal family” of anti-ageing. It is also essential to use sunscreen daily to protect the skin against damaging UV rays. After all, prevention is better than cure.

Takeaway: Hyaluronic Acid is a hydrating ingredient that can temporarily plump up the skin. Despite its benefits, Hyaluronic Acid serums must be used with an occlusive moisturizer to ensure it does not take water from the skin – further dehydrating the skin.
