Artichoke Extract

Today's skincare ingredient of the week is Cynara Scolymus Extract, most commonly known as Artichoke Extract. This plant is the edible bud of the thistle plant, which belongs to the sunflower family. It is native to the Mediterranean, having first appeared in modern-day Greece. One of the first usages of the plant was recorded over 2,000 years ago.
Since its discovery, the plant has been used for its medicinal properties and consumption. Artichokes have many health benefits, such as helping lower blood pressure and blood sugar, preventing gallstones, and stimulating bile flow from the liver. In addition, they have high levels of minerals and fibre.
This plant is perfect for both your body and skin. For skincare, every part of the plant, such as the leaf, stem and root, are used to make the Artichoke into an extract. This potent extract contains high levels of vitamins and antioxidants, which is one of the many reasons it should be a part of your skincare routine. Keep on reading to find out why skincare products with Artichoke Extract should be on your beauty radar.

  1. Protects Skin Barrier from Free Radicals

One of the most notable antioxidants in artichoke extract is Vitamin C. Vitamin C is highly known for repairing damaged skin cells, evening skin tone and brightening the skin.

Due to its high levels of antioxidants, this extract is also known to prevent oxidative stress. According to Healthline, oxidative stress is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants, which affects your skin health.

Moreover, the leaf extract contains cynaropicrin, a chemical known to reduce the damage of UV rays and further protects and strengthens the skin barrier.

  1. Builds Collagen Production

A large study by Molecules, a chemistry journal, claimed that Artichoke produces skin anti-ageing effects. Ageing is normal, but prevention from pre-mature ageing is key. Artichoke extract can help prevent fine lines and other signs of early ageing.

In another study, artichoke extract showed high levels of collagen and hyaluronan. Hyaluronan is a binding agent, similar to the fluid surrounding your joints. Whilst collagen is a staple for healthy skin. As we age, our body's natural collagen supply decreases. Thus, it's vital to use ingredients that promote healthy collagen production while improving skin elasticity.

  1. Anti-inflammatory Properties

Inflammation of the skin has many causes. It can be caused by an unknown internal source, such as allergies or specific food intolerances. External causes that may cause inflammation is the city's pollution, over-exfoliation, or adding skincare products that don't agree with your skin. Good news! The cynaropicrin in the extract is well known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which also helps increase blood circulation. Cynaropicrin is a phytochemical responsible for the bitter taste of the Artichoke. It has anti-ageing properties for skin that has been exposed to UV rays.

  1. Minimises Large Pores

Artichoke extract is praised for its pore-tightening properties. This is due to the extract's high moisture retention levels and strong build-up cell-wall density. It should be noted that everyone has pores, and it's impossible to get rid of pores. However, this extract has the power to make your pores appear smaller.

  1. Supports Gut Health

Artichoke is known to help improve your immune system, especially your gut health. If your gut isn't okay, your skin isn't either! Besides its excellent digestive benefits, which help regulate your gut, Artichoke helps protect skin from unhealthy bacteria, which may lead to infections. Another reason artichoke extract is so amazing, if you don't like the taste of Artichoke, you can apply your favourite serum to reap the benefits and protect your skin.
